Writing's on the wall

First National Park:  Petroglyphs National Monument

Three "campuses" of trails showcasing petroglyphs etched in lava rocks up to 3000 years ago.  90% of these were done from 1300-1600AD.

Get your kitsch on Rt. 66

Tucumcari NM

Route 66 parallels I-40, and there are several opportunities to see remnants of the old roadside attractions.  Precious few are still in operation.

Cadillac Ranch

Evolving artwork in Amarillo, TX.  Hundreds of spray paint cans on the premises.  Holland and Whitney added their marks.

Kids saw plenty of examples in New York and New Jersey.

Big load on the Mother Road

Johnnie's Diner on Route 66 in El Reno, OK

Karen: What kind of cheese do you put on the hamburger?
waitress:  "The sliced kind."

Holland ordered the chicken-fried steak.  Notice the size of it, and the size of the bowl of gravy.

A big load on the Mother Road.

Lowest gas price yet.

$2.99 gas in Tulsa OK.

Fill 'er up!

We'll be looking for a diner on Route 66 after OK City.

Bring on the roadside kitsch!

Branson? No!

A sidetrip to Branson was vetoed 3-1.

I can't believe the others would forego a chance to see the Mandrels, the Righteous Brothers, Pablo Cruise, and Three Dog Night.

St Louis version 1.0

Stopped last night and camped at a rest area on I-70 just west of Indianapolis. Yesterday's approx mileage: 800 miles.

Just drove over Mississippi River and past downtown St. Louis, very near the Arch and Busch Stadium.

This is the first of two visits to St. Louis. Our original plan was to drive I-40 to New Mexico. After adding the New York leg to our trip, we could have rearranged things and headed first to South Dakota. Instead we kept our sights on first hitting Route 66 and the Southwest.

Our trip, then, will resemble a giant "infinity" sign. St. Louis would serve as the node where the lines cross on the hypothetical infinity.

Of course, we're interested in "Infinity and beyond."

Unfortunately, it will likely pass like the speed of light.
