Durango

I really like SW Colorado, and Durango anchors this area.  The downtown was bustling with tourists and folks preparing for the Independence Day parade through the center of town.  Our first stop was at Steamworks, a recommendation from a friend in Denver who spends a fair amount of time in both SW Colorado and local breweries.  We had a great lunch and a superb Colorado Kolsch!

We visited several stores and the historic Stater Hotel.  Durango was once a busy town for smelting gold and silver brought down from the mines surrounding Silverton and Telluride. The hotel maintains a bona fide saloon with bartenders and waitresses in late 1800's period clothing.  I wanted to hang around for the gun fight at 7:00pm, but the parade crowd was growing too large.

Water spots:  #3 on the trip

We headed over to the Animas River for a late-afternoon swim.  I absolutely love these western towns where one can flyfish, raft, tube, and swim in clean water at/near the center of town.  Durango is high on my list for the future.

Our next stop:  boondocking near Mesa Verde!
