Phantom Ranch

In 1913, President Theodore Roosevelt visited the Grand Canyon.  The Rough Rider stayed at Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the canyon where the Bright Angel creek empties into the Colorado River.  Ever since, the Grand Canyon has been a popular destination.

We were lucky to get the last available spaces in the bunk houses.  They are air-conditioned and have showers.  What a luxury!

After checking in, we promptly returned to the refreshing Bright Angel creek.  There are two benches in the small rapids for guests to stay cool.  It was 125+ degrees at the ranch, and 109 in the shade.

After cooling off, we attended a ranger talk on the geology and formation of the canyon.  This was very informative and qualified for their Junior Ranger badges.

As mentioned earlier, we were told dinner was sold out.  Luckily, some spots opened up! Dinner was at 6:30 sharp!  This was a dude ranch dinner:  they rang a large bell in front of the hall.  There are four long tables in the dining hall.  We enjoyed a family-style beef stew dinner and sat with some hiking veterans. All ingredients: beef, corn, green beans, and new potatoes were brought down by mule team.  We also enjoyed corn bread and a salad, and iced tea!  Dessert was chocolate cake and coffee.  Wow!

We went directly to sleep after dinner; we had a 4:25 wake up time!
