The Narrows

Happy Birthday Karen!

We started celebrating Karen's birthday with a hike of the Narrows at Zion.   Visiting Zion and not hiking the Narrows would be like Mork without Mindy, like peanut butter without jelly,  Hall sans Oates.

We boarded the shuttle bus to take us to the trailhead, the Temple of Sarinava (mormon names abound).  The bus was standing-room only.  Visitors are encouraged to hike it early; afternoon summer rains can quickly turn this river trail into a dangerous outing.

Most of the riders had walking sticks. They are very useful in the rocky river beds. Karen brought one carved by her father.  The ranger at the backcountry desk told me I could likely find plenty of abandoned sticks near the trail head.  True dat; as the rest of us scored seasoned sturdy sticks.

We hiked about mile up the Virgin River.  The deepest section was past my waist.  This was a very memorable hike.  Karen and I usually hiked as much soil trail as we could find, while the kids opted to stay in the water.
