West Thumb pots

Expect radically changing speed limits at Yellowstone

We had a nice picnic next to Yellowstone Lake.

Our next stop was as West Thumb.  According to the ranger at the visitor's center, this oft-overlooked area is worth a stop.  She was right.

This area, bordering on Yellowstone Lake, is really stunning.  The proximity of the hot pools to the lake lent itself to "hook and cook" in the old days.  Men would catch fish in the lake, and swing them over to the near-boiling hot pools for cooking.  Talk about fresh!  (that all ended when arsenic was discovered in the hot pools)

160 degrees

Big Cone was especially well situated for the proverbial "hook and cook."
